Red Light Camera Locations
From NYC Driving and Parking in New York City
[edit] Does those camera red light tickets count as points?
The answer is no, although previous these tickets did count as points. These red light camera tickets does not have points associated with them because it's not fair to the owner when someone else is using his/her vehicle.
However the registrant of the vehicle can be held lawfully liable even if he or she was not the driver of the car when it was photographed going through the red light. In that event you will receive a "Notice Of Liability" which is basically a fine for $50.

[edit] Red Light Camera Enforcement
In selective areas in the city, red light cameras are installed to prevent people from running red lights. Usually the camera is mounted on a metal pole in a gray or green box that houses the camera and a flash device.
When a vehicle passes an intersection while there is a red light, sensors pick up the vehicle and triggers the flash and the camera takes a few pics of your license plate. A few days later a traffic summons is mailed to the owner of the vehicle.
These Red Light Violation Tickets are also called "Notice Of Liability" for the registrant of the vehicle for not stopping for a red light at the stop line. It doesn't matter who was driving the vehicle. You must pay or dispute this NOL before 30 days, else you are deemed to have admitted liability and a default guilty judgment will be entered and you will also be charge an additional $25 penalty for the late response.
[edit] Stolen Vehicle
If your vehicle was stolen prior to the date of violation, mail a copy of this notice, along with a Certified Copy of the Stolen Vehicle Police Report also to: NYC Department Of Finance Red Light Camera Monitoring Program 66 John St, Second Floor New York, NY 10038
[edit] How Long Does It Take To Receive A Red Light Camera Ticket?
It all depends how many red light camera tickets the department has to review, each red light camera ticket has to be manually reviewed by someone to identify the plate number and verify the registered owner and address before it is actually sent out. It may take up to a month before you actually receive your ticket so don't even think that after 3 weeks you might have just gotten lucky and the camera had missed your plate.
[edit] Hearing By Mail
Contest the Notice Of Liability by mail within 30 days of the date of the notice: a clear written letter of explanation with any proof.

Remember through out the city there are many redlight traffic cameras. ALL LOCATIONS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ACTIVE. NO LOCATION SHOULD BE IGNORED AND CONSIDERED AS FAKE. The NYCDOT has many different styles of redlight traffic cameras. Generally any redlight traffic camera that has a flash strobe attached to it should be considered a DANGEROUS camera. These types are capable of excellent night quality photography. The olive green two lens non flash box cameras are only capable of taking daylight photos. Almost all of these cameras are in NON-WORKING ORDER. Nevertheless they are approved NYCDOT redlight camera locations and as city finances improve these non-working daylight only cameras are slated to be replaced with flash and/or infrared cameras capable of night quality photography. Cameras labeled as FLASH are capable of day and night photography. Cameras labeled as DAYTIME are only capable of daylight photography. ***THESE DAYTIME CAMERAS ARE SLOWLY BEING REPLACED BY FLASH STROBE AND/OR INFRARED CAMERAS.***

[edit] Red Light Ticket Self Defense
Some had won disputes but spent more money to dispute the case than the ticket is worth.
There was one case that came very close, they contend that at intersections with cameras, traffic engineers intentionally reduced yellow-light times, to increase the number of violators and generate more fines.
[edit] Submit and Share your Camera Locations
Submit Red Light Camera Locations:
If you think you saw a red light camera flashing, let us know, we will put it on our map as Unverified Red Light Camera (Black Dots)Email us at Info@NYCDriving.com .
To Verify:
Send us a digital copy of your red light camera ticket (you can black out your address, name and license plate if you wish)
Verified red light cameras show on the map as RED Cameras. Email us at Info@NYCDriving.com .
[edit] Counter Measures
Radar detectors and specialized GPS devices can warn you when you are near cameras.
License plate sprays and covers to distort the picture if you are photographed.
The effectiveness of these is unknown - MythBusters shows these don't work - and tampering with your license plate may be illegal in some states (it is in NY).
